During your spring cleaning regimen, it’s a good time to check door and window locks and overall home security.

A home safety check takes just a few minutes and will give you and your family peace of mind.  While you’re away on summer vacation, you can rest easily knowing your home is locked up securely.

Redfin offers these home security checks:

  1. Check Your Door Locks

Since your doors are the gateway to your home, they should not only be inviting, but, secure.

The first order of business is testing the lock’s screws to make sure they are securely fastened to the door. Also, check that the bolts running through the locks are working properly. If not, use a screwdriver to tighten everything up.

The next step is checking the operation of the locks to make sure they aren’t sticking. If they are, grime or dust likely is the culprit. Cleaning them is easy. Using a can of compressed air, spray into the lock removing the dirt. Then, spray a small amount of WD-40 into the lock to lubricate the mechanism.

Some locks, particularly deadbolts, might require disassembling.

If the locks are still not operating correctly, have them replaced.

The winter cold followed by spring’s warmth can warp doors and frames. Test each door to make sure they close securely. Replace the frame and or door if there are any issues. A weak door can be easily kicked in.

  1. Check Window Security

Test the window locks to make sure they are securing your windows. Replace them if they are not working. Open and close the windows. If they aren’t moving up and down smoothly, it could mean the frame is warped.

Replace any cracked window glass. A cracked glass is vulnerable and that can draw the attention of a burglar.

Also, check window stops. If you don’t have them, consider having them installed. They prevent a window from fully opening and are a deterrent to thieves.

You can also use magnetic entry sensors that will alert you if someone is trying to open the window. These use adhesive to fasten to window frames and are easy to install.

  1. Lock Garages and Sheds

Don’t forget to check the locks on your garage and shed. Thieves look for power equipment and tools. Make sure the locks on windows and doors of outbuildings are working properly and replace if needed.

  1. Use Deadbolt Locks

Deadbolt locks offer another layer of security for your outside doors in addition to doorknob locks. Since deadbolts are not spring activated, they are very difficult to pick and make a door much harder to kick in.

  1. Trim Shrubs and Hedges

Check your locks during spring cleaning. You will sleep better for it.

Trim any shrubs covering your windows. Also, cut back on tall hedges. Overgrown shrubbery provides a hiding place for burglars.
