Deadbolts are the most secure locks you can have for your home. Let’s look at how deadbolts are important for home security.
the idea of a deadbolt lock might have been a very popular one. If you already have a deadbolt installed, that means your home is harder for a burglar to break into. or if you haven’t installed them, your locksmith should have recommended them to you. However, there are some homeowners that are not that concerned about safety and are still using an ordinary lock that makes them vulnerable.
So, What Exactly is a Deadbolt?
A deadbolt is a locking mechanism with a steel bolt that extends into the door jamb and strike plate of a door frame. It is operated by a twist knob on the inside of the door and the turning of a key outside. Deadbolts will resist force and cannot be jimmied open with a knife or similar object. That makes this lock the best for home security.
There are four types of deadbolt locks:
- Single deadbolt – The door is locked or unlocked using a key from outside of the door. Inside, the lock is operated with thumb-turn style lever. Single cylinder deadbolts are the most common for residential uses.
- Double cylinder deadbolts – These require a key for locking and unlocking from both the exterior and the interior of the door. There is no thumb-turn mechanism on a double cylinder lock.
- Keyless Electronic Deadbolts – A key is not required for this lock. A programmable, custom code is used for locking ad unlocking. However, a key can be used if desired. Keyless deadbolts are a great solution for worrying about losing keys.
- Single-Sided Deadbolts – These have only a thumb turn knob on the inside of the door. The bore hole for the deadbolt is drilled only partially through the door, so deadbolt cannot be seen from the outside. This lock won’t work on a door that has a bore hole completely through.
Why Deadbolts are Important
Deadbolts can increase the security of your home because of their special mechanism and made them much harder to break in for burglars. However, homeowners should not be fooled into the fact that having a deadbolt can prevent your home from being broken into. Deadbolts are only part of the equation, other items such as security systems can further enhance the security of your home.
Deadbolts are underrated in terms of adding security compared to security systems. They can withstand a lot of force that is exerted against them. It will definitely stop any ordinary burglar attempting to forcefully break into your house with a kick to your door.
