Colder weather is fast approaching and it’s time to get your home ready for winter. Here are some tips to winterize your home.

  1. Clean up the Yard – Once the leaves stop falling, rake them up. Also, give the lawn one last mowing. Cut it short to prevent matting from snow.
  2. Clean the Gutters – Leaves and debris should be cleaned from gutters and downspouts to prevent rainwater and melting snow from backing up and leaking into your home.
  3. Install Storm Windows – Remove screens and replace them with storm windows. If your home still has old combination windows, consider installing replacement windows which are much more energy efficient.
  4. Tune-Up the Furnace – Tuning up your furnace will keep it running efficiently and stave off breakdowns during the winter. Have a licensed technician perform the work.
  5. Replace Furnace Filters – These should be replaced once every three months during the heating season. If you have pets or allergies, replace it once a month. Use HEPA filters that can trap more airborne particles than fiberglass filters. If you have central air conditioning, replace the filter before the start of the heating season.
  6. Shut Off Outside Water Faucets – Find the valve inside closest to the outside faucet and close it. Go outside and open the valve allowing water in the pipe to drain out. Leave the outside valve opened for the winter. Remove the inside drain plug and drain any water in the line.
  7. Check for Drafts – Seal drafts from windows or doors using weather stripping or caulking.
  8. Remove Window AC Units – If the window air conditioner is not permanently installed, it should be removed to prevent cold air leaking into your home.
  9. Close the Pool – Make sure all the water chemicals are balanced. Drain all water lines and cover the pool.
  10. Run Ceiling Fans in Reverse – Switch ceiling fans to run clockwise during the winter that will circulate warm air near the ceiling.
  11. Cover Air Conditioner – Cover your outside central air conditioner condenser. There are custom covers to fit your brand.
  12. Window AC Unit – It is best to remove the window air conditioner for the winter. If you can’t, purchase a cover and place it over the outside frame. Use caulking strips to fill any gaps around the window frame to prevent drafts. Remove and clean the filter.

By following these tips, your home will be ready for the winter months ahead.
